December 20 Thursday, Friday, Saturday (18th, 19th and 20th of desember).
Thursday we went to visit the children at ABC foundation and spent the afternoon visiting various ages of children. They were eager to sing and dance for us and when we were all gathered in one room they wanted to ask us all kinds of questions. They were so happy to see all our kids and wanted to know all about them. Fist question was funny… they asked Ólafur and Teddy “what in the world do you have on your teeth?”… this of course was their braces ;O) Second question was… why are you so white? Does the sun not shine in Iceland to make you brown like us? ;O) And so it went on and it was very interesting to hear the questions. After spending about 4 hours with the kids we went out for dinner with Sammy, Þórunn, Sigurrós and Guðjón (who is visiting from Sudan). Friday we woke up early to get ready to go to the mall, Karen Blixen museum and the Giraffe park. But since our driver was late we were not off until lunch to go to the mall. There we were trying to get xmas clothes for the family. We found a shirt for Ólafur but that was it. Since we were off this late we were only able to go to the Karen Blixen museum. It took us about an hour to get there in bad traffic but it was well worth the wait. We really enjoyed the tour of the house were this wonderful woman used to live. We drove back home after visiting the museum and by the time we got there it was already 1930 in the evening. So instead of cooking dinner we walked over the street to eat at another Indian restaurant. After that we watched Out of Africa (the movie about Karen Blixen). Today was a big day… we were invited to an African wedding. It was supposed to start at 11 this morning but due to negotiations over the price of the bride. This negotiation had been going on for days since the father of the bride wanted 12 cows and 120 thousand Kenyan shillings (close to 2000 dollars). In the end they came to the conclusion of paying the father 6 cows and 70 thousand Kenyan shillings (around 1100 dollars). The wedding was absolutely wonderful and so much more different from what we are used too. There was so much dancing. The bridesmaids danced down the aisle. The gospel singing was fabulous and this was all very hard to describe. This all took place just outside the slums. At the end of the wedding we were asked to be in the wedding photo. I still have to empty the other camera to get all the photos from the wedding! After the ceremony we went to the reception for about 2 hours and were home around 17. The kids went to swim in the pool for a while and the parents and the grandmothers relaxed. This evening Sonja and Teddy cooked a homemade meal for a change ;o) Íslenska.
Finally we have arrived in Nairobi, Kenya after 32 hours of traveling. We started out by flying out of Iceland to London. There was a little delay on our flight and since Johanna (Gisli´s mom) flew earlier that morning with Iceland Express she had to wait for us at Paddington station for a while. We got to London around lunch time and went to Paddington station to pick up Johanna and have a very late lunch at Fridays! After lunch we went walking on Oxford Street and Regent street to try and find a store that would sell mosquito nets to sleep under. After an hour walk we finally found one and bought the nets. Since time was flying we decided to head back for the airport to check in for the flight to Doha (Qatar, Arabic peninsula). We got there 2 hours before the flight was to leave and it was strange to see only Saudi people checking in. As we boarded we found out we were not the only white people there ;O) Qatar airway is a 5 star airline that really really impressed us. Not only did they have the cheapest flights but the airplane was brand new along with extremely good service. Touch screen TV’s for everyone and a menu to chose from for dinner. This was a 6 hour flight and we were served dinner, breakfast and free alcohol and soft drinks ;O) The flight was smooth and we got to Doha as the sun was beginning to rise so this was a great time to arrive and the view over the „desert“was great. We got in to the terminal and decided to find a restaurant in this brand new airport and ordered some breakfast. Now the funny thing was to see our mothers (my mom and Gisli´s mom) shocked the Arabian people. Alcohol is not legal so Johann ordered a non alcoholic beer and drank it from the bottle… this caused people to stare at the not so ladylike woman ;O) In the meantime my mom decided to have a cigarette and went to the „smoking room“were she stood with men only staring at her bad not so lady like habit…hehehhe…. Well these ladies were not done shocking the people as Johanna decided to touch up her makeup and started putting some lipstick on and so on as the ladies around us stared ;O) Well we got out of there 2 ½ hours later and were off to fly from Doha heading for Nairobi, Kenya. This was also about 6 hours of flying with Qatar. The airplane was a bit older there but the service was good and nothing to complain about. We did some sleeping during all this travel but needless to say … we were exhausted after all this traveling. One of the suitcases was lost when we arrived. It should get here today… this was the suitcase with all the kids clothes. So they just have to be dirty for a day ;O) Now we have settled in to Gullas apartment in West-lands (since she is in Iceland) that we borrowed. Kids have played in the pool and we have done our grocery shopping. Moms are sitting on the balcony enjoying ÍslenskaJæja þá erum við loksins komin til Nairobi í Kenía eftir 32 klst. ferðalag. August 30 Shanghai and Suzhou.August 19th Our train journey to Shanghai was rather long, or about 23 hours. Apart from relaxing and enjoying the scenery we had a couple of new experiences. First of all the kids got to try the local toilets to do #2…something that can be really tricky when you have to squat down in a moving train…but amazingly it was more simple than we had hoped, although everyone else waited for arrival in Shanghai with a vision of WC in their head J The other experience we had in the train was that this was the first time we used the dining car to get food. Our guide had bought for us dinner and breakfast. The food standard in the trains is not the same as in the restaurants and hotels we have gotten used to eating in. During dinner we got a dish that made us all loose our appetite, namely chopped up chicken with feet and everything J Luckily we had bought some cookies and a few snacks so we survived the trip without harm, but it is needless to say that when we arrived in Shanghai we ate a big lunch and everyone visited the WCs J We were greeted in Shanghai by our local guide Jack. He is an energetic man in his forties who has been working as a tour guide for 16 years. We were not the first Icelanders that he has guided because back in 2005 he was the guide for Unnur Birna’s Miss World contest group when she won the title J Following the late lunch we checked into our hotel. On the way to the hotel Jack pointed out a department store very close by, so of course we went right out after checking in and did some shopping until it was time for dinner. Following dinner we went back to the hotel and went to sleep early because we were still a bit tired from all of our travels. August 20th This was a short stop in Shanghai since we checked out of our hotel at 9am only to head towards a smaller town Suzhou that is about 2 hours away. We arrived there around 11 and were off to see one of the town’s big pagoda and the garden surrounding it. We climbed up the old stairs to the top. This pagoda is like the leaning tower of Pisa. We then went to the Nr One Silk Factory in Suzhou. First we had lunch at there before going into the factory and seeing how the silk is woven and then made into beautiful clothes and more. The girls of course went a little overboard and shopped for all the friends and some family and of course a little for themselves. After the factory we were off to see the old city wall that is surrounded by a canal. After visiting there we were off to sail on the canal. This was so much fun, sailing there is like sailing in Venice. There are houses built all around. They actually call it the Asian Venice. After a very busy and extremely well planned day we headed for the new hotel. Wow we were tired by then. Jack and his driver Mr Tang also stayed at the hotel.
August 21st. We were up again 8 to check out of this hotel to finish sightseeing this pretty town. We were off to Tiger Hill. This is another beautiful garden that was privately owned by a king. He had had this garden made for himself as a burial place. He wound up killing all the thousand workers that helped make this place only to keep it a secret. So we were in the car again and heading towards Shanghai. We drove to downtown and went to see Jade Buddha temple. After that we went to see Yuyuan Garden. This garden was also privately owned before and well hidden. This garden is the fourth most beautiful garden in China. We must admit that we were getting very tired and even with Jacks interesting and fun stories we just were not very into it at the time. There just comes a point when you just get too tired. So we headed towards the hotel and checked in. August 22nd. Today we were up early. Off to downtown to see the “fashionable” downtown Shanghai. We went to the Oriental Pearl TV tower and enjoyed the spectacular scenery of Shanghai. Then we went to downtown were we walked the Bund and Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, the most famous shopping district in Shanghai. Oh and by the way. Jack had taken us to a Carrefour store (like Wall Mart) and there we shopped till we dropped for the children’s school supplies. We were like crazy people in there. We ended up buying an extra suitcase for all the supplies we bought. After all this we were headed for the train station. But before that, Jack took us to the “birth place” of communism in China. Yes we had told Jack that Gisli was the grandson of the founder of the communist party in Iceland. And he insisted on taking Gisli there and have his picture taken there!!! So then we went to the train station only to start our 36 hour trip home. We took the train at 7 in the evening and would arrive in Beijing at 7 am. We planned to NOT eat on the train. And just took a little bit of snacks and cookies ;o) This train turned out to be very nice. It even had western toilets!!! But then again this train goes between Shanghai and Beijing! So we were off early to sleep after a lot of reading!! August 23rd We arrived in Beijing at 7am and were met by a guide and a driver to take us to the airport to catch our plane that was due to leave at 1030. We got there in plenty of time and checked in. We probably stank after not showering and being on the train overnight ;o) we had a 10 hour flight to Frankfurt. Then one hour flight to Copenhagen, before catching our last (3 hour) flight to Iceland. Everyone fell asleep as soon as they sat down in the Iceland air plane ;o) So here we are, back in Iceland. We hope you all enjoyed our travel blog. We loved the comments from all of you!! If you want to continue following our daily lives, we still blog and put in pictures occasionally on Sonja’s space. Shanghai and Suzhou.19 ágúst.
Ef þið viljið halda áfram að fylgjast með okkar venjulega lífi, þá setjum við stundum blog og myndir á síðuna hennar Sonju á Http://spaces.msn.com/sonjap August 18 Three GorgesAugust 14th After a long, but relaxing train ride we arrived in the city of Chongqing, where we were greeted by a new guide Linda. As we got out of the train station she got a „porter“ to carry our bags. He used a piece of bamboo and rope to carry two heavy suitcases on his back. We learned that this was the local way to carry heavy things. Light things you also carry with sticks – chopsticks J We went to a nearby hotel for breakfast and then went on a short tour of the city. We learned that we were in one of the largest cities in the world – with 32 million inhabitants – yet we had never even heard of it before our trip. We visited the city center square where people were practicing Tai Chi and Kung Fu as part of their early morning routine. It was amazing to see all this people exercising out in the open, something other countries could definitely learn from. After the tour of the city square we were all in for a big surprise. We went to the local zoo to see Panda bears. It was amazing to see these beautiful creatures up close. There are very few pandas left in the world so this was truly unique. We spent a good deal of the morning watching the pandas and other animals in the zoo. Following a lunch we headed directly for our cruise ship. We were tired from all the travel and just wanted to relax for the rest of the day. Unfortunately we didn‘t realize that the restaurant onboard the ship didn‘t open until the following morning, so we had to find something to eat for dinner. Gisli scoured the docks until he found instant noodles, bread and other snacks for us. We managed to get into an open wireless connection and made use of that to post some blog entries that we hadn‘t been able to post for the past few days due to lack of internet connectivity. After that we went to sleep early. August 15th Early in the morning the ship departed Chongqing heading down the Yangtze River. We all woke up early to participate in Tai Chi (shadow boxing) lessons on the sun-deck. The kids had a blast trying to perform this ancient exercise method. Following the exercise we had breakfast and went back outside to enjoy the beautiful scenery. After lunch we arrived at place called Fengdu and went on shore for an excursion of the Fengdu Ghost Town. This Ghost Town was built 600 years ago as a temple for the spirits on their way to the next life. In order to get to the Ghost Town we first had to walk 200 stairs from the ship and then take a ski-lift to the top of mountain (or walk additional 600 steps) in order to reach the place. The kids really enjoyed passing through all kinds of hurdles set there for the spirits to ensure that they would get to Heaven and not Hell. We also enjoyed all the temples and seeing how various religions in China depicted the passage of spirits from the earthbound life to the next life. This included seeing sculptures of the various gods of heaven and hell and also sculptures of the torture chambers of Hell. On our way back to the ship we did some shopping with the local salespeople who were really insistent on selling us something. Just before dinner we passed through the first of the three gorges on the Yangtze river. There are no words for the beauty of these gorges. It is amazing to sit back on the sun deck and absorb it all into your mind. One funny thing is that there were only 19 non Chinese people on board. The Chinese people spent most of their days inside their cabins while the European people all sat outside ;o) There was only one more European family on board. They were French and had 4 kids that were a little bit older than ours. What was more funny is that Sonja noticed the Microsoft clothing on one of the daughters and asked the man if he by any chance worked for Microsoft.... of course he did.. so we called the cruse Microsoft traveling the Yangtze river ;o) He and Gisli even knew the same people ;O) After dinner we passed through the second gorge and it was even more spectacular than the first one. After enjoying the beauty of nature we watched a cabaret show that the crew put on and then went to bed. August 16th We again got up early or at 7 am to go to the sundeck and practice the Tai chi. Then we were off for breakfast before departing the ship again only to board another smaller ship. This time we were off to Shennong Xi stream. This is another spectacular gorge that takes your breath away. We were shown the three hanging coffins, these coffins are places in the cliffs about 60-70 meters up high (now only 10-15 meters high after the water raised due to the dam) and hang in various places in some sort of caves. These coffins are believed to be about 2000 years old. This was the way people were buried at the time by the local farmers. They believed that if they were buried higher than they were more likely to get to heaven. After seeing these gorges we again departed this smaller ship only to get on even a much smaller boat. We got on to what the local farmers call Peapod boats. Only about 15 years ago this was a very rural community and the river was not so big. The farmers could only use these peapod boats to get their crops between places and travel. The farmers used to do this naked since they had to constantly jump out of the boats to drag them up stream. Now since the dam has been built they are not so rural anymore and are understandingly shyer. They know have shorts and T-shirts on and drag tourists up and down the stream ;o) This was so much fun and I think for the first time since we came to china we connected a little bit with the Chinese people. We were in about 10 or 15 peapod boats waving each other, racing and learning Chinese songs. This was a very memorable experience. We then were off to our cruise ship again and decided to relax until dinner. After the captain had raised his glass and said „Gambei“ to everyone (cheers) we all got outside to look at the unbelievably indescribable ship lock we were about to go through. What a project, we sailed into the first ship lock and were closed in and started to descend, this we did four times in four different locks until we had descended 90 meters. We then went to the evening show and had a good time until 11 o clock and then went to sleep. August 17th This was a very very early day, everyone had to get up at 6:45 to eat and get ready to depart the ship to explore the Three Gorges Dam site. Like I said before. This is too big to describe. It is just something people have to see for themselves. We spent the morning there or until about 10:30 am. Like I said people you just have to see it. We were just about to end our cruise but before we sailed through the second part of the third gorge. At noon we were at our last destination and got off in a very pretty town Yingchang. Our new guide Ming came to pick us up. She found a porter to take our suitcases and of we were with her and her driver to see some local caves that are in the cliffs above the Yangtze river. Then we were off to have lunch and finally to a Sturgeon museum. Sturgeon is a fish that lives in the Yangtze river. This was so much fun to see and the kids had a blast feeding them and seeing how big they are. If I would see one in the river I would think I was meeting the great white ;o) The kids also fed the gold fish that were in a pond and wow that was a feeding frenzy. We also had a short stop at a local museum to see some old artifacts. We then checked into our hotel and had early dinner before going to sleep. August 18th. Today we are getting ready to go to Shanghai. We will spend about 20 hours in the train so we will blog again when we are online again. We often see funny misspellings here in China. Here at the hotel they offer a sauna and food massage on the 4th floor ;o) Again our photos will be posted on Sonja´s website due to some problems here ;O) http://sonjap.spaces.live.com/photos/

- Xi'an
Við munum vonandi blogga meira í kvöld og jafnvel bæta inn fleiri myndum. August 14 Xi'anNote: Two posts today...scroll further down for the other one. Also more than one new album. August 10th We woke up early to go to the train station since we were heading to Xi‘an. We had tickets for Soft Seater, which the Chinese call VIP. This is what we would consider 1 star train ride J We can‘t imagine what hard-seater was like. The trip took about 5 hours and we were greeted in Xi‘an by our new guide Jenny. She took us to our hotel and since we were pretty tired, then we decided to call relax for the rest of the day. August 11th We met Jenny at 9am and got into the mini-bus to head off to the Terracotta Warriors. We first stopped at a factory where we were shown how the warriors were made and of course we bought some souvenirs. The Terracotta Warriors were made by the very first emperor of China about 2200 years ago. They were made to protect him in the afterworld and there are about 8000 warriors in the three pits that have been discovered. They are actually still being excavated. A large number of them are still kept under soil since they are painted with a color that fades away after about 3 days of getting in touch with oxygen. It was amazing to see this and all the work that must have gone into making them. A total of 700,000 people are believed to have been involved in making them in a 38 year period. We then had lunch at a nice tourist place close to the Terracotta Warriors. The kids had extra portions of French fries and desert J After lunch we went to see the Emperor’s tomb. It is a small “hill” which underground contains a pyramid like burial chamber. This tomb and the Terracotta warriors are two more items we have seen of UNESCO’s World Heritage list. After the tomb we went to see the Winter Palace of the Tang emperor. It is called Hua Qing hot springs and is a wonderful palace built around two hot springs. It contains a number of baths created for the emperor and his favorite concubine Lady Yang. She is said to be one of China’s 4 most beautiful women throughout history. Our guide Jenny told us of the wonderful love story between Lady Yang and the emperor – a Chinese Romeo and Juliet story that ends with him killing her to satisfy the wishes of his generals. That evening we were treated to a wonderful show of dance and song from the time of the Tang Dynasty. Before the show we tasted a feast of the local specialty, dumplings. They came in all shapes and colors with various fillings. It was so delicious. The show that followed was amazing and well worth seeing. August 12th After a long evening the night before, we decided to start this day at noon. We started the day by visiting the ancient city wall of Xi’an. One of the best preserved city walls in the world, a square shaped wall measuring a total of 13,7 km in length. After visiting a small museum and learn the basics of Feng Shui, we set off on bicycles to ride the entire wall. We had three double-bikes and one normal bike. In the burning the sun we managed to ride the entire wall in less than an hour. We were very proud and very exhausted. After riding the bikes we went to see the Wild Goose Pagoda, a large tower built to house Buddhist scriptures back in 652 A.D.. It has a nice temple built around it and we learned about its history. Following this our great guide Jenny had a wonderful suggestion. She asked if we wanted to go for traditional herbal Chinese foot massage. With our muscles sore from all the riding and walking we were more than happy to try that. So the entire family went for a 70 minute massage. And the Chinese must have a different definition of foot massage, because our hands, shoulders, backs and feet were all massaged. The kids had a blast, especially Axel, Chaz and Katla that were very ticklish. Out of the massage parlor, with smiles on our faces, we had yet another traditional Xi’an dish, the hot-pot. There each one of us got a small pot to cook thin slices of meat and various vegetables in a blend of hot spices. This was a unique dining experience and everyone left with full tummies and smiles on their faces. We really have to compliment our great guide Jenny on the selection of food during our stay. She managed to make sure we never got the same kinds of food twice and experienced new things. We then called it an early night following a great day J August 13th Today we met Jenny at 9:30 and after checking out of the lobby we were off to downtown Xi’an to do some shopping. Jenny had decided to come along with us and assist us in doing some shopping. Her boyfriend came and met us and she insisted on him carrying shopping bags – as a practice for when they get married and she goes shopping. Everyone had a fun time shopping and the bags kept piling onto Jenny’s boyfriend. Following yet another great lunch at a local restaurant that normally doesn’t cater to tourists we were off to the train station to catch our train to Chongqing. Our train left at 15:45 and a 17 hour train ride started…
Xi’anATH: Tvær færslur í dag - hin er aðeins neðar á síðunni... Einnig eru nokkur ný albúm!! 10. ágúst Við vöknuðum snemma til þess að ná lestinni til Xi’an. Við áttum miða í “mjúk sæti”, en það kalla kínverjarnir VIP sæti. Við kölluðum þetta nú bara 1 stjörnu lestarferð J Við getum ekki ímyndað okkur hvernig “hörðu sætin” voru. Lestarferðin tók um 5 klukkustundir og þegar hún var á enda tók nýji leiðsögumaðurinn okkar hún Jenný við okkur. Hún fór með okkur upp á hótelið okkar og eftir að við tékkuðum inn þá ákváðum við láta þetta vera nóg þennan dag þar sem við vorum öll mjög þreytt. 11. ágúst Við hittum Jenný klukkan 9 og fórum í bílinn okkar áleiðis að skoða Terracotta stríðsmennina. Við stoppuðum fyrst við verksmiðju sem sýndi hvernig stríðsmennirnir voru búnir til. Við auðvitað keyptum minjagripi þar. Terracotta stríðsmennirnir voru búnir til af fyrsta keisaranum í Kína fyrir um 2200 árum síðan. Þeir voru búnir til svo að hann hefði her til þess að verja sig eftir að hann færi yfir í næsta heim. Kung Fu and thousands of BuddahsAugust 7th 2007 Shop till you drop! That was what we did on Tuesday, we got up around 9 and were off with two taxis to downtown Beijing. Our driver was off today so we just waived in some taxi to get us to town. This was both exciting and scary. The girls were together and the boys together. We wound up at the same mall thankfully and walked in... oh what a dreamland for all of us. Nike, Adidas, Puma you name it, it was all there. So everyone shopped dirt-cheap name brand clothes for both boys and girls. For lunch we skipped the Chinese food once and found the famous Outback steakhouse, steak and ribs it was for everyone ... and cake and ice-cream in desert..mmm .. everyone walked out happy and full. After shopping a little more we waived in 2 taxis again and showed them our address to our hotel in Chinese. The girls driver was fine with it and they were off with one taxi and Gisli and the boys with another. The girls quickly lost sight of Gisli’s cab and just waited to get to the hotel. Well the driver pulled up to the wrong hotel for the girls.. hmm... and did not speak any English any more than the normal Chinese person. We took out the business card of our hotel again and pointed to the Chinese name for the hotel, he then took the card and called the hotel to get information about getting to the hotel. Everyone was a bit nervous about all this, but they all kept calm while the cab driver was of driving again. What many may not know is that just Beijing houses more that 17 million people... very big. Finally they were back at the hotel, obviously the boys took the long way to the hotel because they arrived just after the girls. That evening our guide Ho picked us up with the driver and we were off to the train station. We took the night train leaving at 21:30 to Zhengzhou and had a so called soft sleeper. This is all so funny, we always expect something fancy, but oh no... we had a „fancy“ sleephut to ourselves, but the air-conditioning did not work and there was one bathroom for 40 people. This was of course a hole in the ground that you just squat over and do your thing. This is how most bathrooms are in China. And what we have found out is that you need to travel with toilet paper with you everywhere you go, because there usually is none. August 8th 2007 We arrived in Zhengzhou at 7:15 in the morning and there our new guide had arrived to pick us up. His name is Yangle. He was a pleasant man who took us to our new driver. We were off to see the Kung Fu town here in China, there are 76 schools there and some house more than 15000 students from the age 3 and up. We also went to Shaolin temple where the Kung Fu monks also go to school. We walked around the park and saw the world biggest pagoda forest, this is a graveyard for the more high ranking monks. We then went to see a Kung Fu show. Wow... talk about great martial art. The kids just loved it. During the show the presenter asked if someone wanted to learn on stage from a monk, we of course pushed Olafur to raise his hand. Out of 3 people chosen he was one of them. Hehe... we had a blast watching him and the other two trying to follow the monks doing Kung Fu. What a great experience for Olafur!!! In the end the audience was supposed to decide who did the best… well Olafur was applauded the most so he got the price. After the monk temple we were off to see the oldest Buddha temple in China, it is called the White Horse Temple. It has the name because a white horse carried the Buddha books from India to China to this temple. There the Buddha books were translated to Chinese. After all this we were off to the hotel for rest before having dinner. Our dinner was on the 25th floor of a hotel and spun around for a great view over the city Luo Yang. That evening Sonja got very sick and cramped up the whole night, with diarrhea and throwing up. Probably a touch of food poisoning. August 9th, 2007 We all got up at 8 am to eat breakfast and to get ready to see the Longmen grottoes, Sonja tried to pucker up and was not going to miss this regardless of being a bit green. The Longmen grottoes is terrific place to go to. It is one of the great places that is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. There the mountain is all carved with over 100.000 Buddha statues inside manmade caves. The biggest Buddha is about 17 meters high and only the head is 4 meter high. This is a must see for everyone. After that we had the rest of the day of and decided to go back to the hotel so that Sonja could rest a little. We woke up again at 4 in the afternoon and decided to be brave and go for a walk downtown. We strolled towards the shopping street through a park were the young and old Chinese men and women played cards. Everywhere we go we are looked at and people are in aw over the children. This tends to be a bit uncomfortable but we went ahead anyways. We walked around until almost 6 and after doing some even cheaper shopping that we did in the capital Beijing we headed back to the hotel for dinner and to pack for our trip to Xi´an. One more thing I have to put in is that while were walking through the Longman grottoes some Chinese men started pointing towards Gisli and saying Swartsneger Swartsneger, hehe Gisli liked that.. I guess all white people look alike here ;o) I just took the compliment along with Gisli and decided that I must look like his wife …hehe.
August 06 Children, Buddahs and ConcubinesA good night sleep for everyone finally ;o) first time since leaving Iceland on August 1st. Today we were off at 9 am as usual and this time we went on a real adventure. This day will be remembered forever as a very special day. We went to HuTong this morning. Got out of our taxi and were off with a new guide to see the old Chinese neighborhood. We traveled in rickshaws this time inside the neighborhood. We had to have 3 rickshaws since we are so many. 3 people on one and then 2 people on the other two. The kids just loved this, but at the same time it was a little nerve-racking to begin with. It would be kind of like going into downtown old Detroit and ride around on a bike... except you are the only white people around. But we had nothing to be afraid of I think, it wore off after a little while. We had our first stop at a local preschool, the school is an old house that belonged to the emperors sister. So a very old house indeed. It was so much fun to see the children. Unfortunately we came at a time when they were not supposed to be bothered, so we only walked between the classrooms and said a short hello to them and took some pictures. After visiting the preschool we were off to visit a Chinese family in HuTong. There a young lady welcomed us in and showed us how her family of 18 people or 3 generations live in. This was very interesting to see. Their courtyard used to be housed by 5 generations and but now with the smaller Chinese family’s were they are only allowed to have one child they now live only 3 generations, but rent out the rest of the small houses to others. What is hard to describe is the actual size of what they call a house, this is like a very very small bedroom. After visiting the family we were back on our rickshaws and leaving old china behind. We stopped for lunch, this time we were put in a private dining room so that we could eat without being bothered. We finished our very good meal with ice cream and headed for the Lama temple. This temple was built as living quarters for the emperor while he was still a prince, but after he became an emperor it was no longer used by him. So he decided to change it to an Lama temple to honor the Tibetans’ and show them that he respecter their religion. This is a huge Buddah temple for the Lamas. It has tons of Buddah statues that represent different kinds of Buddah’s. One might be for medicine, another for long life, one for love and even one for math. Teddy got on her knees and prayed to the Buddah of math ;o) inside one of the temples there is the world’s largest statue carved out of one piece of wood, this is a Buddah figure that stands 26 m / 78 ft tall. After visiting the Lama Temple we went to see the Forbidden City, or at least a tiny part of it. In order to see the whole Forbidden City you would need 3 days of walking. This city is the best preserved imperial court in the world. It was built around 1450 by then emperor and emperors lived there until 1912. Every generation of emperors kept the old buildings like new and kept adding to the city. In the Forbidden City there are 9999 1/2 rooms (as holy as it could get – and 1/2 room less than Heavens). The emperor had many concubines, as many as 3000 and they all got married to him. They entered the city to marry the emperor and were never allowed to leave after that. What we did not know is that if you were the emperors concubine and got pregnant and the emperor did not have a son yet with his empress if that the first son born would be the next emperor regardless if he was the concubines or the empresses son. So the concubines kept a log of when they slept with the emperor so that they could proof the age of the first born son... from conception (because Chinese track age since conception). Anyways I´m not going to bore all of you to death with history ;O) We were then off to a traditional teashop to try out some good Chinese tea and learn more about it. There we tasted 6 different kinds of tea in the cutest tea tasting environment. We bought some good Chinese tea and some more souvenirs before leaving the tea shop. Then we headed for Tain´an Men Square. That is where Mao´s mausoleum is located. Unfortunately the square was closed due to Olympic preparations ( 2008 Olympics will be in Beijing ) so we just drove around it. After that we just headed back to the hotel and rested for an hour and then ate a terrific meal downtown. This will be all for now. We just put in pictures both from Summer palace and Temple of heaven since our upload last night did not all come in. Then there is a new album from today’s fun!! Við vorum að láta myndir aftur inn í Summer Palace og Temple of heaven albúmið þar sem það uppfærðust ekki allar myndirnar í gærkvöld. Við létum einnig inn nýtt albúm frá ævintýrinu í dag. August 05 Talking to the godsThe girls can‘t sleep... that is how our morning started ;O) they woke up at 3 am and just could not fall back asleep. But we were off with our guide at 9 am to visit the Temple of Heaven and the Summer palace. We started at the Summer Palace that was the palace for the emperors and their family. This in an unbelivebly big garden that was made by an emperors mother. She was the grandmother of the last emperor of China. The garden has a lake in it that is extreemly large. This lake was manmade. The emperors mother liked to rule herself and would not alow her son to rule his country. It is said that he never actually ruled but that his mother did. She liked to live a luxurious live and spent most of China‘s money on luxurious things that she could have around her. This included making the lake. We walked around the garden and enjoyed the spectacular view that is hard to just blog about. If anyone who reads this has seen the movie „The Last Emperor of China“ then you might remember the surroundings in the movie. That is all from the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven. We took a boatride on the lake and sailed over to the „Turtle island“ this is also an island that was made for the emperors mother. The island looks like a giant turtle and is supposed to bring you a long life. What is special about everything in the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven is that everywhere the number nine comes up. The number nine is the emperors number and therefore concidered a divine number. All steps, windows, columns and so many more things always come in nines or a multiple number of nine. There are nine arches over the bridge and there are 36 steps to the Temple of heaven and so on and so on. After visiting the Summer Palace we had lunch at a local resturant. It was a all you can eat buffet. This of course was all very good. After the lunch we walked over to a pearl factory. There they both grow oysters and freshwater pearls. Katla got to fish out an oyster out of a tank and the lady asked us to guess how many pearls were inside the oyster. If we got it right we would get to keep some. Axel guessed the right number or 28 pearls!!! So he got two pearls out of the oyster and we all got one per person. They are beautyfully pink and will be kept for future jewelery ;o) We then went of to the Temple of Heaven. This tempel was only used by the emperors family and only 6 days a year so the emperor could talk to the gods and give offerings. No one else was alowed in this temple when the emperor was not using it. So a very unused place one must say. This is not only one building but many different buldings for different types of praying. One temple was for praying for good weather, one was for keeping the offerings, whether it be cows, roosters, goats or something else. Also there is the wall you can wisper to. We tried to wisper to it but it would not answer us ;O) After the Temple of Heaven we were off to a silk factory. There we were shown how the silk is made all the way from the silk worm. We even got to strech the silk for a quilt. Gísli took alot of pictures when we were streching, it is funny to run through them really quick and then its like a video !! The kids wound up shopping more clothes for themselves and for some little relatives ;O) After the factory we took a one hour break at the hotel and the kids changed into their chinese clothes and we were of to an acrobatic show. It was like walking back into the 1950´s the whole atmosphere and the theatre that we went to. The kids absolutely had a blast at the show and came so happy out. We then walked over to a local resturant for dinner. We were all really tired by then. The local dinner was just not doing it this time around. We walked back to the hotel and walked through the back streets with our guide. Wow that was really something. It‘s so strange to see such poor neighborhood right behind our hotel. But it was well worth walking through. Well we wish you all a good nights sleep ... we are off to bed.. write again tomorrow. Þessar perlur verða varveittar fyrir framtíðar skartgripi ;o) Við fórum því næst í The temple of Heaven. Við fengum að strekkja silki i sæng. Heyrumst aftur á morgun August 04 Climbing the Great Wall of ChinaSo our day started early, not because our guide was here but because we all woke up at 4 am. We all waited until 7 am to get up so that we could go and eat breakfast. It was a good western breakfast that we got and were all set to go when our guide Ho got here with her driver. What a great way to travel, just get up and be picked up and off we were to go see the Ming tombs and the Great Wall of China. This was a 2 hour drive to get to our destination. We started by stopping at a local Jade factory that carves jewelery and statues from jade. This was fun to see and obvious that the guides try to keep in touch with old China by taking us to factories. Of course they wanted us to shop as well, and that we did. We bought a family happiness ball carved out in jade. We then got to the Ming tombs. Ohh what a wonderful place to go to. It has such big history to it. That is where 13 of the 16 Ming emperors was buried and we visited the oldest and the greatest tomb or the resting place of the Yongle emperor (1360-1424). Most of the tombs were burned down in the peasant revolution in 1644. But the peasants did not burn down his tomb because they thought it was so grand it must be built for the gods and therefore did not burn it down. We seem to bring a lot of attention to us. Not only that we are so pale and blond and redheaded, but people also come up to us and ask not only to touch our hair or hands but also to ask if we really have 5 children. They ask to have pictures done with us…hehe .. yes it is fun to begin with I’m sure. After visiting the tomb we were off to lunch at a place that was a factory and a store on the first floor and a restaurant on the second floor. This was a very touristy place. We walked through the factory and saw how Chinese people made copper plates and vases. It made you respect all the work that is behind every painted bowl. We then went upstairs to the restaurant and had a feast up there. we were served sweet and sour fish, pork, lemon chicken, soup, vegetables and more. The girls then went downstairs and did some SHOPPING ;o) Teddy’s favorite word….I think she gets that from her grandmother ;O) They all bought themselves beautiful Chinese dresses. Finally we were off to see the Great Wall of China.
So the men in the family finally became men. We had a wonderful time at the wall. We took a 2 hour walk where there was a lot of climbing up stairs included.. or about an hour. I think our thighs and butts will ache tomorrow after all the walking ;o) The view was unfortunately a bit misty since we had a downpour before we started walking. But enough for our eyes. The wall is a little over 5500 km long and we walked only 2 or 3 km of it. It was great to see this wonder of the world and it made you appreciate all the work that must have gone into building this. This was a great day that ended at a very very local restaurant. It did not look even save to eat at when our guide walked in with us. We had to use the bathroom and there was only a hole in the ground. We decided to take our chances and hope for the best. This turned out to be a great meal, the servants kept putting more and more on our plates and stood over us while we ate. This was all really good. So here we are again back at the hotel. We feel like kings and queens the way we are treated here and look forward to tomorrow. Tomorrow we will visit the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace. Then on Monday we will visit the Forbidden city and Houtongs (the old Chinese courtyards) that some say are the true Chinese way of life. We will also visit a kindergarten there. Feel free to leave comments, we love to see who is visiting our space. The traveling family. Þá verður farið í Temple of Heaven og Summer Palace. Svo á mánudaginn förum við í Forboðnu Borgina og skoðum Houtongs sem eru gömul kínversk hverfi með litlum bakgörðum sem hefur verið haldið upprunalegum. Þar munum við líka fara í heimsókn í leikskóla!!! Endilega skiljið eftir skilaboð til okkar á “comments” gaman er að sjá hverjir kíkja við;o) Kveðja frá ferðafjölskyldunni August 03 Travelling to ChinaSo here we are safe and sound in Beijing, China, we arrived after more than 24 hours of traveling. Our flight from Iceland to Denmark was great, Gislis friend Tolli was our pilot. It was smooth as a feather and got Sonja off to a great start flying. We left Iceland at 1 am and even though everyone was tired no one wound up sleeping. We had a 8 hour layover in Denmark so we decided to go ahead and go to town and have breakfast. After eating we walked to „Botancial garden“ and „King‘s Garden“ we just layed there and enjoyed the good weather and went on a tour around a castle. We were all soo sleepy since we had not slept during the night. Aournd noon we were back at the airport and had lunch at Herreford steakhouse..mmmm steak for everyone!! We then took a flight to Frankfurt Germany, it was a smaller plane and only an hour and a half flight. The pilot there managed to scare the crap out of Sonja... she thought of skipping the China flight then, although she never said it out loud. We were flying through a thunderstorm and had to slow down our flight since the airport in Frankfurt closed due to weather... we circled for a while until the airport opened again. The pilot kept reminding us of our seatbelts and the bumpy ride we were going to get.. he then managed to fly with out bumping into Frankfurt. We had to run to our next flight so we would not miss it. Frankfurt airport was a madhouse since due to all the delays that the weather caused. We were flying this time in a Boeing Jumbo jet that had two levels. We on the other hand were flying cattle class and were sitting on the first floor in the centre. No window seats. But the service was great and it was interesting to fly in such a huge plane. The flight was rough going from Frankfurt as we had to pass the storms again but it was ok most the flight. No one really slept during this 9 hour flight and it seemed like we were never going to arrive in China. But here we are.... we got out of our plane and our guide was waiting for us when we got out. She had a driver with her that will be with us for the next four days. Her name is Hoe. we came to the hotel.. after not sleeping for almost 36 hours, this was our day off to relax after the flight. We came to our rooms and all fell asleep...woke up at dinner time and went downstairs to the resturant and decided to have a real Chinees dinner. We ofcourse went overboard since we did not realize that their portions are alot bigger than in Iceland. We ordered duck, dove soup, corn soup, beef stew, fried beef, chicken and some chinees vegetables that were cooked in garlic and butter...mmmm .... the servants all stood over us while we ate. For a while we had four servants standing by us ready to help out the kids and obviously having fun watching us try out our chopstick knowledge. Katla had a show for them trying to eat rice with chopsticks and always just got one or 2 grains of rice in her mouth at a time;O) We are now back in our room relaxing and wathcing tv. The internet connection is free. Tomorrow is a big day. We will go to the Great Wall and then Ming Tombs. We will write about all that tomorrow. Good night everyone. We also put in pictures from our travel and this evening. Góða nótt July 04 Soon we will be on the road again...On August 1st our next part of the World tour will start. Then we will head to China for a 3 week roadtrip. You can see our plan at Sonja's space http://sonjap.spaces.live.com
Our travel stories will be posted here :-) August 30 Final photos from our Eurotrip 2006Finally our last photos are in. We also put in a blog a few days ago about our last days in Europe!
Later! August 27 Last few days in EuropeWell as most of you know we are now back in Iceland, but we did forget to write about our last days in Europe. After the cold weather and rain in Prague we headed for Avignon (southern France.) this wound up taking us 2 days due to illnesses. I got a fever in Prague, but got back on my healthy feet again after a good night sleep in Zurich. As we were leaving Zurich to drive to Avignon, Gisli started feeling ill and wound up pulling over an hour after we left to .... yes we can say it..puke. I took over the driving that day and we decided to try and get as far as he could make it. .... it did not last very long . 2 hours later we were back in Lausanne, Switzerland in a hotel and Gisli under the covers with a fever and an upset tummy. Well we just relaxed that day while Gisli slept and spent the day around the hotel. The next morning Gisli was feeling a lot better and we headed for Avignon again. This time no one got sick or got a fever ;o) we were delighted to be back in this wonderful town, where we could lay in our tent with a terrific view of the Palace of the Popes. It was not to hot either, just comfortable. We went out for dinners and walked around town. Went on the local Paris wheel and enjoyed the spectacular view of this ancient town. The next morning we went to a nearby zoo and spent half the day there. It turned out to be great last days in Europe. We headed back towards Germany the day before our flight to Iceland and decided to spend the last night in a comfortable hotel. The next morning we were up early and went to Euro park, one of those splash and fun parks for kids... and adults ;o) since our flight was not going to leave until 9 that evening we had plenty of time to go on rides and get wet. Of course this was the morning that 12 people were arrested in England after planning on bombing a few planes that were heading for the US. Our flight wound up being late since it got delayed in England that morning .... what a comfortable feeling that was for the scared of flying Sonja ;o) Well we arrived safely back in Iceland way past midnight were Gisli´s mom and Ólafur waited for us! We drove the total of around 7500km, paid a reasonable amount in gas and a bunch for toll roads.... but it was definitely worth it !! Until next year.... See you all here..... who knows, maybe we´ll do Bangkok to Bombay?! August 06 Two new blogs and albumsWe are heading back to Avignon (through the Alps) - because in Avignon the sun is shining!!!!!
In the meantime enjoy two new portions of our travel story and two new albums Slovenia, Austria, Czech Republic and more...Well so the next few days were a bit cold, rainya and strange. We were on our way to Slovenia to see the fabulous caves in Postojna we arrived there just before 4 in the afternoon and managed to get the tour at 4 o’clock. This was so much fun to see. You start out by going 2 km into the caves by a trolley and then take off on foot for 1 km with fabulous view of all kinds of rock formation. Gisli was going there for the second time, as he had went there with his mom and dad when he was 12 years old. We had plans on camping by the caves, but do to the weather (extreme rain and thunderstorms) we decided on driving further towards Austria. We stopped around 11 in the evening just south of Vienna (Austria) and got ourselves a hotel for the night due to weather that was not getting any better. We were off again around 9 to see Vienna and drive on to Prague. Vienna turned out to by a drive through city since the weather was not getting any better yet. We got to a town called Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic just before 5 and got into a church that my brother had told me he had visited there. It is all decorated with human remains. Yes it does not sound good, but is is a beautiful setup that is very peaceful. The smell in there was the only thing that I could say was different. You could smell death in there. As we lit a candle for my brothers(Stefan) and Sigga’s baby (knowing he was being baptized at that moment in Iceland) my brother called and told us the name, Hlynur Fannar! For those who want to read more about this church I recommend this website that tells a little about the story of it. Well we arrived at our campsite, this time just outside Prague (Czech Republic) and put up our tent. The weather seemed to be clearing up so we were not to worried about the camping. I did some laundry finally and then we just ate at the campground resturant. We went fairly early to bed, or around 11 and went to sleep. But about an hour later we were freezing and it had started pouring down rain. This is how our night was, waking up, freezing, falling asleep for a few minutes and waking up again. I could almost smell the pneumonia in the cold. When we finally got up in the morning we decided that there was no way of staying longer in the Czech Republic since the weather forecast had no changes in it. It was only around 12 degrees C or maybe 56 F and we did not have the camping gear for this kind of weather. Czech Republic is may I say extremely low in prices and so we had decided that the girls could spend their Christmas and birthday money there if they wanted to and we could tour Prague during the day before leaving. After all we have been in 38 to 40 degrees so far on our trip so this felt like freezing temps. Prague is a very dark and heavy city. It is hard to describe it in words, but at the same time very beautiful. The girls went bananas shopping and Katla managed to get about 8 times more for her money in Prague than in Iceland. She walked out of the toy store with a smile wrapped around her head ;o) she still got money left over after buying a Babyborne stroller, Babyborn swing, a new Babyborn and some more things!! Well at 5 in the afternoon and after reading the weather forecast for Europe we took a leap on the expressway and got the #$%$#% out of town. We have now driven back through the Czech Republic, almost done driving through Germany and are spending the night in Zurich, Switzerland before heading somewhere where the SUN SHINES ;O) Maybe France again!! Gisli is having a blast trying out new speeds in Germany, as most of you know there is no speed limit in Germany.... like 210 km/hour or around 170 miles/hour... while I am writing this travel story. I did wind up with a fever and still got one, so I am looking forward to the hotel tonight. August 03 When in Rome .... do like the Romans!!!!Yes we did find out that Romans got their own way of driving. There are no lines in the road to separate the lanes... so where we would think there were 3 lanes ...people had „made“ 6 lanes... and not even ones ;o) People also just stop where ever and park their car...even if it is not a parking spot but in the middle of the road. If you need to get into a store, just stop your car in the middle of the road and put your emergency blinkers on and run in ;o) so like most know we are quick learners and did like the Romans ;o) Rome was a great city and at the time we were there it was very very hot. We went on our first day to see ancient Rome, the old temple, palaces and the Coliseum among other things. This took all day to see and we managed to get really sunburned that day. Teddy probably got a second degree burn on her neck that day. This was a great experience and really worth all the 9 hours of walking we did that day. The next day we went to see the Vatican. We stared by seeing St. Peters church, one of the biggest and most glorious churches in the world. This is a place where all the popes are „buried“ including St. Peter the founder of the Catholic church. It is full of statues and other art created by various artist like Michelangelo , this is a truly great experience to have been there. After the Church we walked to the Vatican museum and stood in line for an hour to get in. It houses various collections that the popes collected through out centuries and included a visit to the famous Sistine chapel with the frescos of Michelangelo depicting god touching Adam with his finger to give him life. We also visited the various rooms that used to be living chambers of the Popes decorated by Raphael. After spending almost 10 hours in the Vatican (the smallest country in the world) we went back to our bed and breakfast (yes in Rome we spent our first nights in a real bed) and crashed..... I must say that the girls did incredibly well considering the amount of time we spent in museums and walking around. In the evening we went out for McDonalds...yes pasta and pizza (the Italian food) is getting tiring ;o) as we came back we had plans on using the Jacuzzi at the bed and breakfast. We had made reservations to have it. We saw ourselves all relaxing and getting our strength back ... but when we got into the Jacuzzi room we found out that it was only for 2.... Because there were 2 bathtubs with massage in them and not a big hot tub. So we decided to let the girls enjoy it ;o) Well after our 3rd night in Rome we were off to Venice. On our way there we stopped in this small town called Assisi. This town is as well on the UNESCO´s world heritage list and has a beautiful basilica dedicated to St. Frances. The founder of most common monastery practice in the world. He is as well buried there. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims come there every year to pray at his tomb. This is an extremely beautiful place that is not to touristy. We recommend for those who visit Italy to visit this place. We had our lunch there before heading for a short stop in Rimini, where Sonja had finally planed on getting her tan at the beach. Well of course after crossing the mountains that divide Italy into east and west and we were around 20 minutes from the beach we got a MAJOR big thunderstorm... it was not about to go away so we just kept on driving to Venice were we were spending 2 nights at a Courtyard Marriot hotel. Well instead of the beach we found ourselves a shopping centre since we had not been able to do laundry for 5 days and were out of clothes... or at least the girls were! This was a great excuse for shopping ;o) we bought skirts, underwear and socks to have for the next 2 days and the girls also found some more stuffed animals that they bought. The next morning or almost around lunch we were off to sail to Venice. We left our car at the hotel and took a bus to the boat station. We soon found out that getting to Venice and spending a day there is beyond expensive. But it was a beautiful city that is hard to describe and fun to walk around and sail around with a singing gondola ;o) The girls also fed the pigeons which was a big hit with them!! We were back at the hotel around 7, had a quick dinner and were off to bed. Now we are stuck in a traffic jam on our way to Slovenia were we are going to spend a night and see one of the greatest Cave in the world. After that we will drive through Austria on our way to the Czech Republic. We will tell you all about this later!! August 02 days 5,6 and7
Day 5, 6 and 7 we were off to Nice, Monte Carlo, Cannes (where the European film festival is every year) and our next campground. we stopped once to go to a sandy beach in St. Tropes where the rich and the famous go on their yachts and big speedboats (that day - off in the distance Pamela Anderson got married on a yacht). We wound up just driving through tunnels and highways at the top of the mountains and arriving at our campground (in Italy, on the border of Monaco) where we were going to spend our next 2 nights. This campground was really nice, with a rocky beach and a few pools. We just relaxed and enjoyed that day at the campground and decided to see Cannes and Monte Carlo better the next day. We went to the campground restaurant that was more than nice, where we sat outside under straw umbrellas and had a real Italian pizza …mmmm they were soo good…sooo different from the crappy things at home. During the dinner, two campground employees came and gathered the kids around and took them to the dance floor to teach them some dances. The girls wound up being on the dance floor until 1130 that evening and were just exhausted after dancing to YMCA and doing the Macarena and so much more.
Well the next morning we drove back to Cannes and had lunch in downtown, we then just drove the beach front to Monte Carlo and stopped there to go see the palace were prince Albert of Monaco lives. This city is so great in many ways, they have so little space being that this is one of the smallest country in the world. There are elevators and escalators everywhere since it is all in a hill. So to go from the underground parking to different places you just get on the elevator that is inside a huge cliff. And walk through tunnels inside the cliff in order to get to different stores and places. We went to a zoo there that is on the outside of the cliff and under the palace. We all had a great time there and this was probably the cleanest zoo I have ever been to.
One thing cannot be left out. GISLI LEFT ME(Sonja) AT A TRUCK STOP BY “ACCIDENT”!? Yes I was about to pee my pants and Gisli got of the road at a truck stop…. I jumped out of the car and ran into the restaurant and Gisli was going to park the car. What he did not know was that he did not drive towards parking but an exit towards the highway with no turning back….hmmm here I was getting out of the bathroom and no Gisli outside… I did not have my phone so I could not call him…. I waited and waited…but then I remembered that Gisli had given me 100 Euro to keep in my pocket… so I went to see if I could call him…. The truckers had started winking at me and trying to pick me up….. well Gisli was just driving and driving and did not find another exit for 15 minutes or so…. Then he finally took an illegal u-turn and drove back in a panic… I think he was more scared of how pissssed I would be than something else…. Me on the other hand was getting scared with my surroundings and the people around. I was so relived when an Italian woman helped me with the phone since I did not understand the Italian directions on it. I got a hold of Gisli just as he pulled back in to the truck stop and boy was I relived. The girls had gotten pretty scared about mommy being left and have never been so glad to see me before ;o) We were back at the campground for dinner that evening and decided to head for the rocky beach. I was a bit nervous for the girls there and we wound up not spending a long time there. we went back and had dinner at the same campground restaurant again and then were early to bed.
So now we were heading towards Pisa. Were we found a campground and spent 2 nights there. we used that evening to see Pisa and of course climbing the leaning tower of Pisa. This was actually pretty scary and strange to be leaning so much while climbing the stairs up. After 300 steps and feeling like doing a heavy workout we enjoyed the spectacular view…. Or at least I did. Gisli sat with the girls and made sure they did not move;o) We came back to the campground around 10 that evening and took a cold shower after a hot day. Yes we have had some very hot days since we got here and are very often a little miserable during the nights.
We got up early the next morning to head for Florence, Italy and spend the day there. we got into Florence that was a madhouse during the tourist season and we cannot say that we really enjoyed it. Although the Cathedral was just beautiful and nice to have seen it we decided to go back to the car and see what else we could do. But guess what…. NO CAR!! Our car was gone and we seemed to have no way of expressing ourselves to the police to see if it had been towed or stolen. The laptop, passports and most our belongings were in the car. Well after walking around and looking for the police station that the police tried to tell us about we wound up at an information center were finally someone understood us. The girl there was really nice and explained to us that only the people who live in downtown Florence are allowed to park in town… so probably it got towed away….sure enough after a few phone calls she found the car at a depository and called us a taxi to get there. this wound up costing us 100 Euro (10.000 Kr or around 130 dollars) . we had never seen any markings about this parking, but then again it was probably in Italian). We decided to leave the city and decided to try out a town called San Gimignano (Tuscany) since we did not have anything else to do. This also happened to be one of the greatest towns we have ever been to and is on UNESCO´s world heritage sites. We wound up spending the whole day there instead and walked through this beautiful medieval town that has 14 towers and has been preserved as it was originally in the 13 hundreds. Originally there had been 72 towers but now there are only 14 left. We were just fascinated by everything there and walked around the small narrow streets and looked at the different museums that were there including a torture museum that was really interesting but maybe a bit graphic for the kids. We had our dinner there at a real Tuscan restaurant with local wine from the vineyards that were just outside the restaurant. Mmmm…. Gooood… yes we are food people ;o) We arrived late again at the campground and fell asleep around 1 am only to wake up early and are now heading for Rome…. July 31 Castle Days - days 4 & 5Well we have not been able to get on the internet until now. It’s a bit harder to find hotspots in southern Europe than it is in the States. After our last blog we went on to just south of Montpelier, we only got one night there being that is was full on the campground the next day. We took the one day there at a nice campground and crashed after a nice dinner there. When we got up in the morning we packed up and went to the pool that was on the campground. The girls of course loved the pool, funny how the pool can become such a remarkable thing when it’s a new one ;o) Well off we took towards Carcassan to look at this great castle and decided to see if we would find another campground there afterwards or just go somewhere else Carcassan was absolutely great and we were sooooo impressed with the size and the surroundings of it. Its amazing that those big castles still exist or ever existed. We looked around and took some tours as well. After being there for a few hours we were off to find a campground. We decided to just drive in the direction of Marseille and see where we would find a place. Well as it turned out we stopped on the highway due to a traffic accident and wound up turning around and drive off the highway and into this great town Avignion which is just one of the greatest town we have been to so far. This place was built up by a few popes before the Vatican was chosen as the center of the catholic church. The whole town was surrounded by a fortress wall. We found one of the best campgrounds as well were we had a view of the Palace of the Popes. We walked the whole evening around the town and enjoyed the culture of the city. So many artists, actors and pantomimes were showing their talent around town. We had homemade dinner at a local restaurant and had a fabulous time in all. We have decided on going back there someday and spend some more time there. July 27 Back on the road - European Roadtrip days 1-3So now our family is back on the road again. This time the destination is southern europe. 9 countries and 3 weeks. We flew in to Frankfurt-Hahn in Germany and arrived there all in one piece....some of you may know that Sonja is afraid of flying and was soo relived to be on the ground again. We got our rental car (Opel Zafir) a futuristic french car;o) and plugged in our GPS and laptop. We are using Microsoft Autoroute to navigate our way through Europe which is the European version of Microsoft Streets and Trips that we used last year in the States. Our navigation system got the name Katrina, being that she talks to us and tells us when we are supposed to turn and when we are off route and so on. But the first night that we used her to get to the bed and breakfast she soon got a new name.... BITCH... yes we sometimes missed a turn and then of course she got the blame for it. The computer responded quickly to that name and started calling me a TRAMP... actually she was saying turn onto ramp....but I heard turn TRAMP....;o) In less than an hour she got her last name ...TRAMP and is has stuck to her and she likes to say her name ;o) We only stayed the one night in Germany and woke up early and got a nice breakfast to start our longest driving day. We were heading towards France and had decided to stop in Luxemburg on our way. We stopped in the center of the capital and went sightseeing there. We saw a beautiful cathedral, walked through downtown and went to see old underground fortress (Cassemates) dug into the hills. We had a great time there and did a lot of walking up and down between caves. We then went on to get to France. France is soooo beautiful and I just love all the little towns and the big churches and castles that go with them. We took the small roads from Luxemburg with the help of the „TRAMP“ and this is so much more fun than just staying on autobahns doing 150 km/hour. The one thing we found out the hard way is that we cannot make ourselves understandable to the French people in the small towns.... so we went without dinner until we got to the campsite at 9 in the evening. Our first campsite was really nice. We had a pool in front of our tent and lake nearby (Luc du Panthier) or lake of the panther?? That we went swimming in. In the morning we woke up soooo hungry being that we had wolfed down a pizza the night before. Gisli and Teddy went searching for food while me, Chaz and Katla put our things away. After a real French breakfast (baguette bread, cheese and more cheese and ham) we went swimming and then were off to see a huge castle nearby. It was really great to see. After seeing the castle we were off to Geneva in Switzerland. We were camping there as well and were pleasantly surprised to have a lakefront campsite by lake Geneva. We put up the tent and threw our swimsuits on and got into the lake.... in 33 degree weather the lake feels really really good. That evening we then drove to Lausanne and had a really nice dinner( at Mövenpick). Wine, cheese, beef tartar, veal and giant shrimps were a part of that dinner. We all went to bed really tired after a great time in Geneva. So today. We woke up early to take a swim before packing and heading for a tour of the UN office in Geneva (Palais de Nationes) where by the way Gisli has been a couple of times before because of his humanitarian work for UN OCHA. We were shown a part of the building including the main auditorium where large UN meetings a re held with important leaders of the world. This was a good tour and was interesting to see how the building is made up from material from different UN member countries of the world. We are now in the car .... with 3 sleeping girls and are back in France heading towards Montpelier on the Mediterranean coast of France. There we plan to stay 2 nights while exploring the large castle Carcassane.... we will stay in touch ... |
